Reinventing an old piece of furniture is so fun and rewarding and it really can give your whole room a new feel!
We had an older, very plain desk that was once my sewing table and had been residing in my daughter’s room for the past several years. She was ready to move it out and I had a blank wall in the game room that would accommodate the desk perfectly.
I had painted the desk green when it was in my studio and the color didn’t fit the color scheme of my new game room. The first thing I did to give this old piece new life was to give it a quick sanding and a coat of paint in robin’s egg blue. I wanted this piece to be really special and to look aged.
I found some beautiful craft paper ... my plan was to decoupage this paper onto the top of the desk. I wanted it to look like a vintage piece that had parts of the wall paper top missing, so I carefully planned the paper placement and tore all of the edges. Then using a product called Mod Podge, I glued the paper to the surface of the desk, making sure to completely cover the entire table-top surface with Mod Podge.
Once the Mod Podge was completely dry, I got to work with gel stain. Using a soft cloth and brown gel stain I went over the entire surface of the desk rubbing the stain on and rubbing off the excess to give the piece an aged look. To seal all of my work, I coated the entire desk with a satin varnish. To complete the makeover, I found some decorative pulls that I added to the desk drawers and now my plain old desk looks like an expensive designer piece!
Breathe new life into an old piece of furniture at your house; you’ll be glad you did!
Tips:
Use wallpaper instead of craft paper and cover an entire surface of your furniture for a more cleaned up look.
When working with Mod Podge, it is important to cover the entire surface ... if you don’t the gel stain will not go on evenly.
When appling gel stain, use a soft cloth or good quality brush. It is oil-based so have some paint thinner on hand for clean-up.
Give your piece 2 coats of varnish, to be sure everything is sealed well.
